"We made a ton of progress since we talked . . .as a reminder I don't speak Chinese natively, so I'm learning along with her and my goal in November was to have snack time be entirely in Chinese and I would say by this point, like all of our mealtimes, including preparations and cleanup are all in Chinese. . . and now I'm looking to work on my goals for next month are to do playtime in Chinese. She (daughter) understands probably 90% of what I say which is amazing. . . I feel like we're on the right path."
Through SBV I've been able to stay consistent and feel supported. I appreciate how transparent other parents are with their stories. It helps me feel less alone and encouraged to keep going.

"SBV has been such a supportive, helpful group for our family on our bilingual journey. Sunny has done a great job creating a safe, welcoming community for everyone.
The monthly progress parties and classes have also been a huge help.
As a mom of 4, I so appreciate having access to a curated monthly list of resources and fun activities that I can arrange quickly to enrich our learning at home.
This is especially important for me as non-native speaker because it helps me push beyond my own boundaries and explore new things with my kids.
It's encouraging me to not give up on my goals while cutting myself some slack when I don't see obvious progress."

"Being a part of SBV has empowered me to add Mandarin to our busy lives in a stress free way.
Sunny's effective tips and amazing resources each month has given me the tools to make learning Mandarin fun for the girls, myself and my husband.
I have access to this amazing community where my questions get answered right away and I get to share in the challenges and joys of language learning.
I am so grateful for SBV and Sunny — that this mental load of learning Mandarin can be lightened and this goal be achievable.
With Sunny’s encouragement and group coaching, he (my husband) has since started speaking more Mandarin at home and now reads Chinese books to the girls.
I highly recommend SBV for others looking to teach their kids Mandarin!"

"SBV has been a great support in our family's Mandarin journey. Before we joined, I never felt like was doing good enough. I felt stuck and saw little progress, and simultaneously felt guilty for not being able to afford the tutors and the nannies and the thousand dollar packages that other parents were doing.
The SBV community helped me to get off the comparison hamster wheel and turn to my child and ask him what he wanted to learn. What are his expectations and goals? He surprised me and we are now working toward those goals.
I have come to see that bilingualism is a lifelong journey and I am thankful to Sunny and the SBV community for the constant support and tools to keep us on the path!"

Sunny is the bright light that parents who seek to teach their children Chinese in a non-Chinese speaking environment need! She is thoughtful and creative in helping you figure out what works for you, your children, and your family long-term rather than set unreasonable goals.

"Thanks Sunny! I now put less pressure on myself and still get to teach my kids Chinese in small increments. It's helped to protect our parent-child relationship."

"Her strategies and suggestions for helping my daughter’s learning journey were spot on. Applying what Sunny has taught through the course, my daughter’s (and my teaching journey) has been fun and effective. We definitely did achieve the goal that we set out at the beginning of the course with Sunny’s help and support."

"Being part of this group is encouraging to me; I can reflect about learning another language in a safe space."

"I overhead my kids bickering with each other in Mandarin! When they reach for Mandarin to express themselves even when they're annoyed or emotions are running high, it makes me feel like we're succeeding at having Mandarin burrow in as one of their heart languages. I've also observed my kids making more of an effort to reply back to me in Mandarin and go for as long as they can until they run out of the vocab they need, which I'm also thrilled with because Chinglish still counts as practicing in my book.."

Founder of Spot of Sunshine Chinese.
I was a secondary teacher for several years, teaching in America and in Taiwan.
When I became a mom I wanted to pass on the gift of bilingualism to my kiddos but I was at a loss as to how to go about it in a monolingual context we lived in at the time. We were the only Mandarin speaking family in town.
Through my own struggles of passing down Mandarin, I discovered a way to do it that requires little prep, with a doable routine incorporated into our daily life.
Now my daughter (8 years old) is fluent in Mandarin, working on reading Chinese bridge books and helping me teach her little brother.
It's become my passion to empower families to thrive
in learning Chinese.

Parents with kids any age since what I share in the membership is mainly to help family get clarity and create a doable plan to help their kids learn Chinese. But it will be more focused on toddlers to early gradeschoolers.
Parents who would like to see their kids make more progress in Chinese but are feeling overwhelmed and need help establishing a doable language routine, stay motivated and consistent.
The membership is primarily for parents with some background in Mandarin Chinese wanting to help their kids learn Mandarin. You don't have to be a native speaker, but some background and ability to communicate and read simple children's book would be ideal.
Mandarin Chinese
Both traditional and simplified Chinese.
Creating an effective family language plan, building a powerful Chinese rich immersion environment at home, how to motivate your child and make Chinese learning fun, learning Chinese as a busy parent (featuring two dads), healing with the culture to teach Chinese with freedom and so much more!
I intentionally made this a membership and not a course because we as parents don't simply need the right resources and lessons but also a supportive community in this oftentimes lonely process.
There's also simply too much to cover and so many unique nuances when it comes to helping our child learn a second language.
That's why I created a space where you can get the personalized support you need to see your child truly grow in the language and enjoy it as long as you need.
After all, we're raising life-long learners of Chinese and that requires consistency. We have greater success at staying consistent when we're motivated and inspired and have a village to support us.
